NDs are doctorate-level, medically trained health care providers who emphasize disease prevention and patient empowerment while using low-cost and minimally-invasive natural therapies to support healing.
NDs attend a 4-year, post-baccalaureate, graduate-level program at one of five accredited naturopathic medical schools in the U.S. The 4,000 hour doctoral program includes: a strong emphasis in the basic medical sciences and clinical diagnostic skills, extensive training in naturopathic modalities such as nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, physical medicine and counseling, and over 1,500 hours of direct patient care training. After completing the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Exam (NPLEX) Parts I and II, NDs are then eligible for licensure.
No. In the state of Maryland, Naturopathic Doctors do not serve as primary care providers and act as specialists in natural medicine. Dr. Emily encourages all of her patients to have a primary care physician or pediatrician to cover general medical care and screenings.
Naturopathic doctors are not currently able to contract with insurance providers in Maryland and are considered out-of-network providers. All services and fees are paid for out-of-pocket. Upon request Dr. Emily can provide you with a fee slip which you can submit to your insurance provider for possible coverage. Medicare and Medicaid do not cover naturopathic care in Maryland. Standard laboratory testing ordered by Dr. Emily is generally covered by insurance unless the patient has Medicare or Medicaid.
Yes. Naturopathic care is generally covered by Federal Savings Accounts and Health Savings Accounts. An itemized receipt can be provided upon request for your records.
The initial consult visit with Dr. Emily is 2 hours for adults and generally 1 hour for children. During this time Dr. Emily takes an extensive health history and just as importantly, she uses this time to learn more about who you are as a whole person and to establish the foundation for a therapeutic relationship. She will review your nutritional and lifestyle patterns while learning what triggers stress for you and what creates space for joy. Dr. Emily may perform a physical exam and order laboratory testing if needed. At the end of your visit, she will outline and review a personalized treatment plan for you which may include: changes to diet and lifestyle patterns, suggestions for mindfulness meditation and other self-care practices, and the incorporation of herbs, homeopathic remedies, vitamins, minerals or other nutritional supplements to support healing and encourage vitality.
Before your visit, please download and complete the Naturopathic or CranioSacral Intake Forms. Bring the completed forms with you to your visit or scan and email them ahead of time. If you have copies of recent lab testing, that would be helpful to bring as well though not necessary. Please make copies ahead of time if possible. You are also encouraged to arrive with a curious mind and an open heart as you may be introduced to new perspectives and treatment suggestions regarding your chronic symptoms.
